On Tuesday November 4, Southside Shopping Centre is marking Purple Tuesday by helping to raise awareness of sensory and accessibility issues.
Purple Tuesday is an annual initiative which looks to improve the customer experience for disabled people and their families year round. Participating organisations, such as Southside, make commitments to greater inclusion and accessibility, to ensure a positive experience for all visitors.
To mark Purple Tuesday, Southside is hosting a number of charities and initiatives such as a special ‘Baked Bean Zumba’ class organised by The Baked Bean Charity, an adult disability group which helps those with learning disabilities to maximise their lives.
The charity will also be running a dance show on Purple Tuesday from 11.30am-11.45am, and a Baked Bean DJ performing from 11.45am-12.15. A flashmob will also take place on the day.
The centre will be also hosting a variety of charities to celebrate and raise awareness of organisations that help people overcome barriers to employment and life:
- One Trust provides tailored support for people with disability and profound and complex needs, including arts, therapies, physical activities and communications. The charity will be exhibiting art created from their service users in the centre.
- Beyond Autism celebrates the individual, ensuring that children and young adults using the service have access education, empowering a life full of choice, independence and opportunity.
- MIND supports those experiencing mental health challenges by tackling stigma, improving access to services, and campaigning for positive change.
Southside Shopping Centre is dedicated to continuously improving inclusivity and accessibility for all visitors. Additional accessibility facilities at the centre include:
- Changing Places toilet facilities for people with profound and multiple disabilities are fitted with specialist equipment including a changing bench with enough space for up to two carers to assist those with a disability.
- Wheelchair hire to ensure guests with mobility issues can enjoy their visit.
- Accessible parking spaces are available both car parks at the centre.
- Hidden disability lanyards can be collected from a member of the Southside Shopping Centre team.
- Quiet hours take place every Wednesday from 9am-11am, with retailers reducing noise for those who prefer a calmer shopping environment without music, product demonstrations or mall activity.
Shannon Reed, centre director at Southside Shopping Centre, said: “With more than 16 million people in the UK living with a disability, and 80% of those having hidden impairments, it’s vital that places like Southside are welcoming, inclusive and accessible to everyone.
“Purple Tuesday is an opportunity to celebrate the steps we’ve taken so far, while also recognising there is always more to do. From our stoma-friendly and changing places facilities to quiet hours and accessibility-friendly initiatives, we’re committed to creating an environment where all our visitors – no matter their needs – feel valued, supported, and able to enjoy everything the centre has to offer.”
