Westgate Oxford has unveiled a dynamic new interactive 3D installation on Leiden Square named ‘ART and PLAY’, which aims to transform the traditional shopping experience into an interactive world of imagination.
Created alongside CRIA Projects, the installation is inspired by inclusive public spaces which use bold colour blocks and abstract shapes to delight the senses, ‘ART and PLAY’ encourages curiosity by blending art, function, and play.
The new space at Westgate Oxford features colourful cubes, archways, slides and cylinders, all of which have been designed to spark imagination while providing a safe environment for visitors of all ages to rest, play and meet. The centrepiece of the installation is a large-scale interactive structure where visitors can sit, reflect and connect with others in a unique sensory environment.
It has been brought to life by Irish artist Maser, known for his bold geometric patterns and eye-catching colour combinations. Maser has infused each element with his signature style, creating an environment that elevates the entire experience from mere play structures to true artistic expression.
The installation is also fully accessible, featuring wheelchair-accessible and buggy-friendly benches.
Brendan Hattam, centre director at Westgate Oxford, commented: “ART and PLAY is a unique space that brings art, play and community connection to the heart of the city, and we’re thrilled to hand it over to our guests to enjoy.
“As a central part of the Oxford community, we wanted to create an inviting and fun environment where everyone – from families of all ages to students and tourists – can relax, connect and create new memories. We hope our guests will love the vibrant installation as much as we do and we encourage them to come down to our official launch event to experience the family-friendly fun.”
