Moorgarth to create a new restaurant, retail and leisure space.

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town and adjacent to Waverley train station, the new proposal will significantly improve the existing site, with the creation of new easily accessible public realm and new retail & leisure units bringing modern, flexible space, with many benefitting from stunning south facing views overlooking Edinburgh’s Old Town and the Unesco World Heritage site.

Along with a newly designed spaces, a new entrance at the corner of Princes Street and Waverley Bridge will be created enabling full disabled access, much improved access into Waverley Station and it will release the congestion at the top of Waverley Steps by extending the pavement by over three metres when travelling west towards the Scott Monument.

A key feature of the new roof terrace will be the creation of retail, restaurants and leisure units along the south, east and west elevations. The north elevation of the terrace will be open onto Princes Street with wide steps leading from Princes Street to an open piazza area.

In March 2018, Moorgarth was granted planning permission to widen the entrances onto Waverley Steps in an effort to enhance the visitor experience to the centre and the general aspect up the steps themselves. These works are well underway and due to complete shortly. In addition, Waverley Mall will soon undergo a programme of internal works, aimed at reviving the look and feel of the mall and this will include a total overhaul of the toilets.

Welcoming the decision, Tim Vaughan, CEO Moorgarth Group said: “Since acquiring the mall, it has always been our intention to improve the way it integrates and complements other facilities in the city centre. This, along with continuing to attract new and innovative national, regional and independent occupiers, is all part of our long-term vision.”
