Cineworld revamp confirms the Gate as city’s top leisure venue

Cineworld has invested £5.5m transforming the 2,635-seat cinema at the Crown Estate’s Gate leisure complex. The cinema becomes the brand’s 15th 4DX cinema and the first in the North East region.

The opening follows a successful 12 months for the Gate which has seen its offering enhanced by the launch of Rub Smokehouse and Burger UK, and an extensive refurbishment programme.

Burger UK launched in September 2017 in 3,600 sq ft becoming the brand’s first branch outside of its native Scotland. And Rub Smokehouse’s 3,400-sq ft restaurant is the fourth location for the independent brand.

This year, the Gate has also seen a £3.5m refurbishment project which enhanced the public space and facilities, and improved lighting, wayfinding and signage. The Gate also commissioned a triple height glass and light centrepiece for the main entrance, designed by Newcastle’s Faulkner Browns.

Katherine Armstead, senior asset manager at the Crown Estate said: “Bringing Cineworld 4DX to Newcastle in time for Christmas tops off a fantastic year for The Gate. The new brands have added breadth to our leisure and entertainment line-up, complementing the broader offer within the city centre and ensuring we continue to attract significant footfall.”
