    Quiet hours for shopping centre

    Wellington Square has launched quiet hours across the shopping centre to create a more inclusive shopping experience for its customers.

    The quiet shopping hours are being introduced to help people with autism and those with sensory impairments.

    Launching during National Autism Week, the quiet hours will start at the Stockton shopping centre on today (March 31) and will take place every Friday and Saturday from 3pm to 5pm.

    Chantal Taylor, marketing manager at Wellington Square, said: “We are proud of this positive step in our journey to create an inclusive community where everyone is welcome. We are at the heart of the community, and we want to ensure our retail environment provides a positive experience for all who visit.”

    To create a more relaxing shopping experience, the music on the mall will be turned off and unless an emergency arises, no tannoy announcements will be made.

    Wellington Square Management, Security and Housekeeping staff are also undergoing autism awareness training to help customers shop in a more accessible environment and feel safe.

    The shopping centre have also worked alongside Daisy Chain to provide an autism-friendly guide showcasing the shopping experience before visiting which includes a list of stores, how to get to Wellington Square and how to ask for help.

    “We are also working alongside our shops to commit making simple adjustments instore such as no music or till beeps to help those who may find being out in public spaces difficult” added Taylor.

    “Shopping can be very stressful for may autistic people and their families so we hope our weekly quiet hours will make a big difference.”
